History of the medicine cabinet

A Brief History of the Medicine Cabinet:

They used to be simple boxes or chests made of iron or wood where people would store their many different concoctions and herbs used to prevent illness, ease pain or simply to keep bugs away. Over time these chests or boxes morphed into hanging cabinets that were kept on walls to better store their hidden supplies.

No one is quite sure when they moved to the bathroom, but for some reason this room was chosen to house the many different medicines, herbs and potions used in day to day life. Medicine cabinets were simply in design and purpose and it is not until recent times that people gave any real thought to how they looked.

Medicine cabinets were originally designed to be efficient holding areas and for this reason differing styles and sizes began to emerge. You could find medicine cabinets with shelves or partitions used to section off different potions for different uses. Larger cabinets with more shelving and large sections were used to hold lotions and perfumes.

Now a days you can find a wide array of products being stored in medicine cabinets around the globe. Of course you can always find the wide assortment of medicines, vitamins and pain relievers (hence the name medicine cabinet), but you can also find every conceivable convenience item such as toothpaste, razors, shaving cream, face cleanser, dental floss, bandages, and the list goes on and on.

With all that goes into a medicine cabinet it is no wonder that design and style have become focal points when choosing a medicine cabinet for your bathroom. You can now purchase them with very decorative accents, in many different wood finishes or in brass, copper or stainless steel finishes. Lighting is even being added to them to aid in finding what you are looking for a little easier.
